I love the crystals and minerals. They are a never-ending source of fun, satisfaction, and beauty. I first became interested in minerals when I was just 5 years old. I grew up in Butte, Montana, a mining town. My parents walked me past the Anselmo Mine dump and I spotted a small piece of bornite and one of pyrite. Wow, I was hooked. I have been actively collecting ever since.

My first degree was in Mining Engineering, which allowed me to work many years in underground mines large and small. I was fortunate enough to work underground in Butte in the Mountain Con, Steward, Kelley, and Leonard Mines. They were big mines with 100’s of men working in them. I learned a lot from the contract miners and the shift bosses. The largest underground mine I worked in was the Lakeshore Mine in AZ with 2000 men. The smallest had 5 men counting myself.

Later in my career I worked in the aerospace industry where I could build on my experience in the use of explosives. I worked on the design of explosive systems for high performance aircraft, launch vehicles, satellites, the space shuttle, and automotive airbags.

I am a member of the Calaveras Gem & Mineral Society, the Bristol Gem & Mineral Society, and the Northern California Micromounters Association. Participating in clubs like these is great fun and it gives me a chance to give back some of the joy others have given me over the years. I have given many presentations to my own club and to other organizations. I have served in several positions as a club officer, such as Field Trip Leader, Program Chairman, and Federation Director. The mineral clubs are full of great people. They are the ones who chose to get off the couch and stay active and participate in field trips and other club activities. If you are not now in a club, you might consider joining one. I became a mineral dealer when I retired in 2001. My paycheck stopped but my passion for minerals continued. So I became a dealer to protect my retirement nest egg and get some income. One of the great benefits of being a dealer is the camaraderie of the other dealers and all the kind and interesting collectors you get to meet.
